football can take on a player's body. last month, tyler sash was diagnosed with the brain disease caused by repetitive head trauma. good evening. i'm erin kiernan... and i'm dan winters. sash joins a long list of players whose brains have tested positive for c-t-e... now, iowa leaders are trying to prevent the list from growing with a new bill. channel 13's jodi whitworth has details about what could be a "game changer." this week the senate sub committee passed a bill to make it harder for coaches to put an injured player back in the game after a head injury.. 391401 - were going to try and provide as much expertise to the coaches and the student athletes as much as possible and one way we can do that is making sure a certified athletic trainer at the event of a collision sport of a varsity event lawmakers say the bill is all the name of safety... right now trainers are not required at sporting events...

they are taken out of the game and a licensed health care provider must approve them to go back in. but some lawmakers think having a trainer on site.... will make it less tempting for coaches to put an injured player back in the game, if he or she isn't ready. metro athletic departments the like idea but are worried about cost and if there are enough trainers to be at multiple events at once. valley high school's athletic department is already paying 18 - thousand dollars a year for two trainers. 182410 -this new rule makes it that you might have to have 4 - 5 venues covered at one time butt & cover 195014- unfortunately when the state puts more requirements on us but doesnt fund it. we have to cut something else, take away from something else the bill will move to the senate full committee next week. today state senators voted to

des moines police are asking for

police say randal caswell has active felony warrants for ongoing criminal conduct and a parole violation. he's also a suspect in multiple theft cases. anyone with information should call the crime stoppers of central iowa... the number is on your screen. according to police, caswell has a history of being violent. so, don't approach him. we'll have to wait a bit longer for a decision on the bakken oil pipeline... it would run through 18 iowa counties, carrying oil from north dakota to illinois. iowa is the only state that hasn't authorized permits for the project. the iowa utilities board has been weighing that decision all

scheduled another meeting for next friday, in hopes of coming to a conclusion. a months - long project will make it easier to get around urbandale... 100th street, between plum and north park drive, is closing on monday. widening it from 2 to 5 lanes is just one of many improvements the city is making in preparation for a potential iierchange in the area. it'll also address an increase in commuters at a nearby business park. the road will remain closed until november. the university of iowa is planning to cut down hundreds of ash trees. it's an effort to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer. the pest that burrows into trees and kills them, was recently found on campus. officials say cutting down the trees is less expensive than trying to treat them. the emerald ash borer has now been found in 30 iowa counties. lincoln high school celebrated its namesake's birthday with honest abe himself.

as primary season moves into full swing, the democratic presidential candidates are preparing face off tonight. hillary clinton and bernie sanders will make their cases before voters in wisconsin. this, after a close caucus finish and a sanders victory in the new hampshire primary. that win helped sanders raise more than 6 million dollars in the following 24 hours. he's been celebrating with a string of talk show appearances, while clinton has been laying low. a solid debate performance could help get her campaign back on track... but an endorsement from the congressional black caucus also helps. she has been our partner long term. we believe that she's made a difference and she has helped us and helped this country by helping elect democrats across the board. the debate will air at 8 p-m on p-b-s and will also stream on youtube. meanwhile, republicans have

next primaries... the question for people in south carolina is: what kind of person do you want behind the big desk? with chris christie and carly fiorina out, it's a smaller field in south carolina. donald trump has led every poll there in the last six months. so, ted cruz is counting on the state's evangelical voters... the men and women of south carolina i believe want a consistent conservative, somebody who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. south carolina will hold it's republican primary on february 20th. nevada democrats choose their candidate that same day. if you're looking for a job outside the oval office, ames is a good place to start... a new report by forbes says the city has the lowest unemployment in the country. it crunched numbers from the bureau of labor statistics for the unemployment rate of 2 point 2 percent. that's far from the highest rate of 19 point 6 percent in el centro, california...

ames' low rate is attributed to big employers like iowa state university and the department of transportation. we saw a brief moment of sunshine this morning, but the next system is moving in quickly. we'll see an increase in cloud cover over the next several hours and a chance for light snow as your are driving home tonight. the main path will move right through central iowa which will bring snow totals to around an inch by late tonight. not a huge amount, but still enough to create some issues on the roads. high pressure will move into place by friday afternoon, which will bring a surge of cold air to start the weekend. we won't make it up much higher than the middle to upper teens for both friday and saturday before we start to see it warm back up. a bigger system is expectedo move in for early nday which is pected to ing higher snow total ll continue to update you onthe latest track of this storm
